The Bible talks about a time when the Dead Sea will have fresh water and fisherman will fish in it. No one fishes there now because... well, everything is dead. However, in the last several years around the Dead Sea many public beaches have shut down, roads have been closed and rerouted and buildings have been swallowed up by sinkholes. The sinkholes are caused by underground fresh water springs dissolving or diluting the salty geology until the ground caves in. In addition, due to irrigation diversion from the Jordan River, every year the Dead Sea has been dropping approx 3 feet. And now green vegetation is starting to grow around parts of the "dead sea" proving the location of fresh water sources.
While I’m all for preserving the natural wonder of the Dead Sea, what is currently happening is astounding. The Dead Sea is draining and fresh water springs are appearing in and around the Dead Sea. Furthermore, the Bible prophesies a major natural change here from saltwater to fresh water, from "dead" to life. For the first time since the time Ezekiel spoke this, it’s starting to happen.
These waters go out toward the eastern region and go down into the Arabah; then they go toward the sea, being made to flow into the sea, and the waters of the sea become fresh. 9 "It will come about that every living creature which swarms in every place where the river goes, will live. And there will be very many fish, for these waters go there and the others become fresh; so everything will live where the river goes. 10 "And it will come about that fishermen will stand beside it; from Engedi to Eneglaim there will be a place for the spreading of nets. Their fish will be according to their kinds, like the fish of the Great Sea, very many. (NASU) Ezekiel 47:8-10
You might say "well, that was probably symbolic or just a prophetic allegory in the Bible." Maybe. But that’s what they said about Jews coming back to their ancestral homeland from all over the world over 100 years ago. That’s what they said about Israel again becoming a strong and secure nation about 75 years ago. That’s what they said about the "aravah" desert blooming and filling the earth with fruit about 50 years ago. These things have happened and are happening now exactly as foretold in the Bible. Who knows what they will say about the Dead Sea 50-100 years from now. What we do know is that nothing like these stunning natural changes has ever happened...until Israel returned to the land. But the Bible told us that too…
